Ghada Amer is a contemporary Egyptian artist currently living and working in New York. Her work deals with social issues and displays themes of sexuality, the female identity, and the Islamic culture. Amer creates paintings with embroidery and represents the nude female figure separate from the male gaze. She uses suggestive poses, and suggestive imagery to empower women to embrace their sexual desires, while also making a statement about the dehumanizing way that women are depicted for male consumption. Using a broad range of medium she is able to symbolize sexual liberation, consent, and pleasure using the female form. In her paintings and ceramic plates, she explores humiliating stereotypes about women and successfully transforms these images to empower women instead. Her work revolves around her goal to empower women to resist being compliant and passive objects.
